Brass was an extremely popular metal to use for crafting inkwells. It's cost was reasonable, the properties of brass were well known, and there are hundreds of years of experience casting it. For al these reasons brass inkwells were very popular.
This is clear on the Ebay brass inkwell listings, which run to more than 100 items at any given time. The most interest is in older brass or copper inkwells which are in good conditon. A name, provenence and other details all help to bring up the price.
Of course, there is always opportunity with auctions that have poor pictures, poor descriptions and which don't do a good sales presentation.
